Want to do EPIC shit? Start making some mistakes.

September 8, 2013

“The hardest thing to learn is not how to juggle … but how to let the balls drop.” – Anthony Frost, Improvisation in Drama

Mistakes are our peeps, our home boys, our friends, our partners in crime.

They are absolutely 100% necessary.

One the coolest things I’ve found about blogging is this idea that really everything (the good, the bad, the ugly) that happens to me is a real opportunity.  Whether it’s a challenge, a problem, a mistake, a good day, a bad day.

Each scenario presents a gift and the gift is my ability to share with you what I learned so that hopefully YOU can do better because now you know better!

We learn this in Improv too … there are no mistakes, no failures … only gifts.  So us improvisers are known to collect mistakes like a hoarder.

Why?  Because you learn from them, you grow, you become more awesome, more confident in your mistake making.

I like to think of my failures and my mistakes as my own little personal lab of self development. It’s how I get my “stripes” (i.e. – the things that make Judi Judi).   What works and what doesn’t?  This all becomes part of your story, your brand.

Guys – we need to start a revolution and celebrate the awesomeness of mistakes and the good that can come from them!!

Make more mistakes … please!

And what I mean is … do something risky, accept a challenge, go outside your comfort zone.   This is where mistakes are possible and dreams are realized.

Now don’t get all cray-cray and jump off a bridge or light yourself on fire . Be careful out there. The goal here is resilience and perseverance in the face of failure.

Doing anything EPIC typically involves risk … and risk involves a potential mistake or failure.  It’s just the way it works.

Do not allow your fear of “what if” to hold you back from taking risks and failing forward.  This is the resistance, it’s the enemy and it’s only aim is to kill.  For more on the resistance, see my blog post on it here.

What I know for sure about making mistakes:
  • If your not making them you are not human.  You are a robot.  And robots suck.
  • It is how you will earn your “stripes” and build your character.
  • It actually builds confidence!
  • It helps you lighten up.
  • It can open doors you could have never imagined.
  • It can make you proud of yourself, for taking a risk.  HIGH FIVE to you!
  • Not getting what you want can help others! So share your lessons with other peeps!

What’s a mistake you made or a risk you took that REALLY paid off?

Be well. Be inspired!
Judi
